Target delivered better-than-expected Q2 results on August 19th, with net sales up 5.3% to $26.5B and comparable sales increasing 3.8%, steady vs. Q1 on a 2-year stacked basis. Management highlighted encouraging early results from the significant category transitions underway and raised full-year net sales guidance to 5%.

On the bottom line, profitability received a sizable one-time benefit of nearly $1B in tariff refunds, with the majority already collected and little additional benefit expected in future quarters. Underlying profitability also improved excluding this benefit, driven by growth in alternative revenue streams and lapping elevated markdowns last year.

Target shares were volatile following the release and earnings call but are now up ~5%, a more fitting response to a broad-based beat, clear operating momentum, and raised guidance.
